Advocating for Those Who Serve — And Those Who Love Them

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

For more than 40 years, I have worked as a licensed clinical social worker and patient advocate, helping individuals and families navigate some of the most vulnerable and traumatic moments of their lives. I have seen firsthand how crisis impacts not only the individual, but the entire family system.

Throughout my career in hospitals and healthcare settings, I noticed something important:
When people have the right information, know what questions to ask, and understand what they are experiencing, they feel less overwhelmed and more empowered.

That belief has guided all of my writing.

Burned Out was born from heartfelt conversations with a longtime firefighter who shared the emotional burden carried by him and his colleagues over decades of service. As I interviewed firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and their families across the country, a common theme emerged:

Many first responders endure repeated trauma silently.
Many families feel the ripple effects without fully understanding them.
And too many hesitate to seek help because of stigma or fear.

My goal is not to criticize or pathologize.
My goal is to validate, educate, and empower.

If you are a first responder, I want you to know that experiencing emotional strain does not diminish your strength or commitment.
If you are a family member, I hope to provide insight that fosters compassion and open communication.

You serve others every day.
It is okay to seek support for yourself.

Thank you for taking the time to be here.

With respect and appreciation,
Iris Waichler

Burned Out provides clarity, validation, and actionable guidance so that first responders and their families can rebuild resilience, reconnect emotionally, and access meaningful support.

Iris Waichler is a patient advocate and award-winning nonfiction author with over 40 years of experience helping individuals and families navigate medical crisis, trauma, and emotional recovery. She is the author of Burned Out, a powerful self-help guide addressing cumulative trauma, PTSD in firefighters, paramedic mental health, EMT burnout, and the emotional impact of first responder service on families.

Throughout her career in hospital and healthcare settings, Iris worked with patients facing catastrophic illness and life-altering medical conditions. She counseled individuals and families coping with trauma, loss, and complex medical decisions, helping them understand their conditions and empowering them with information, communication strategies, and emotional support tools.

Her work in trauma awareness naturally expanded to include first responder mental health after conversations with firefighters and emergency medical professionals revealed the profound psychological toll of repeated exposure to crisis. Through extensive interviews with firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and their loved ones nationwide, Iris identified common themes of cumulative trauma, PTSD symptoms, emotional withdrawal, relationship strain, and reluctance to seek help due to stigma. Burned Out was written to break that silence and provide validation, education, and practical resources for healing.

Iris is also the author of:
